Our inner Hero/ heroine is continuing through the Tarot Major Arcana Journey and this month we are exploring the High Priestess (II), the second Arcana card, the counterpart to the Magician (I). Where the Magician, represents the conscious mind with its outward, wilful & creative energy of creative manifestation, the High Priestess abides in the realm of unconscious and governs the subconscious, inward-pointed, receptive & intuitive mind. High Priestess is the bridge between the inner and the outer, the sacred Vessel of the Soul containing all the wisdom of ages, personal and collective.
High Priestess is the human Soul and is a culmination of the first triad of Major Arcana – The Fool (0), The Magician (I) & the High Priestess (II) – the holy trinity comprising of the idea & potential (0), the creative impulse, will to manifest, manifesting with light (I) with the in-breath of life, intelligence & sacred wisdom manifesting with sound (II) – this is the first triad, the very foundation and guidance system on which the whole journey rests upon.
The Priestess Holds the key for Timeless & Eternal
If the Magician is the Mind in its active, masculine and wilful capacity, the High Priestess represents the Soul in her feminine, receptive and sensing aspects. There is a natural complementing of these two cards similar to the Yin/Yang balance of feminine and masculine polarities united as one in wholeness and oneness. The High Priestess also can be connected to the World card (XXI) which signifies the successful completion of a major life cycle, wholeness for the Hero/ Heroine, but the High Priestess card holds this unity as a principle and potentiality to remind us of the time-less aspect of all our journeys that ultimately begin and end in the same point zero, the Fool (0).
High Priestess- How to Read the Symbolism
Fully Clothed – the knowledge and wisdom is only partially revealed at this stage of the hero’s Journey. More clothes – more of the hidden truths that are not being revealed yet.
Veil Behind Her – Mush of the mysteries of spirit are veiled and not accessible to the hero at the beginning of the journey.
Book of Wisdom – the guidance of the Soul that contains all the wisdom of ages. Encourages trusting the guidance of the Soul.
Trinity Crown – the universal principle of creation that requires three forces to manifest reality and operate within it – male, female and the offspring or positive, negative and neutral forces.
Colours – blues and purples are the colours of spiritual realms hinting that the High Priestess is not abiding in the ordinary world – her presence is in the realm of the Sacred.
Use your own imagination and intuition to decipher the hidden symbolism of the card with above mentioned key points
High Priestess – Astrological Associations
The Moon, Pisces, Water. Her core message: “You already know.” The High Priestess doesn’t hand you an answer — she points you inward. She is the card of silence, stillness, and the threshold between what is known and what is hidden. In the Fool’s Journey she is the first major turn inward, after the outward, active energy of the Magician. She is also strongly read as a liminal figure — the “third pillar” between the two, the in-between space where transformation incubates before it emerges (much like Persephone between the upper and lower worlds).
High Priestess to Maiden-Mother-Crone triad
The High Priestess is unique in the Major Arcana because she contains all three phases simultaneously rather than representing just one. The key symbol is her triple moon crown — waxing, full, and waning — which maps directly onto the triad:
| Maiden | Waxing / New Moon | Potential, virginity of knowledge, the seed of intuition not yet expressed. |
| Mother | Full Moon | Fertility of the mind, creative gestation, the wisdom book / scroll as “womb” of sacred text. |
| Crone | Waning / Dark Moon | Wisdom, release, the threshold between life and death, keeper of final mysteries |
So, if you are drawn to this card, the High Priestess can point to any of these depending on context:
a new intuition stirring (Maiden), a creative project in gestation (Mother), or a call to face a deep, perhaps final, truth (Crone). The triple crown is the reminder that all three are always present in the feminine psyche — they cycle, they overlap, and the Priestess is the one who sees all three at once
How to Work with High Priestess
- Do I Trust your intuition & that the answer is already within me?
What hidden knowledge or truths are coming to light? - Do I honour my soul’s time to pause, reflect, and not to hastily act?
- Do I value spiritual esoteric wisdom in my life, and do I have room for it?
- Am I connected to my intuition? Am I willing to know truth even if its unpleasant, painful or ugly?
- What am I avoiding in my life?
I hope you enjoyed reading this brief introduction into High Priestess card and will find time to work with this card to make your life more enhanced with your soul’s wisdom and guidance. Next month we will look at the Empress and the Emperor Cards. Happy Hero’s / Heroine’s Journey!
